Biography

JJ, born Johannes Pietsch on April 29, 2001, in Vienna, Austria, is a Filipino-Austrian countertenor who gained international acclaim by winning the 2025 Eurovision Song Contest with his debut single, Wasted Love. His victory marked Austria's third win in the competition's history, following Udo Jürgens in 1966 and Conchita Wurst in 2014.

Raised in Dubai, JJ was exposed to both pop music through family karaoke sessions and opera through his father. After returning to Vienna in 2016, he pursued formal training in classical music. He studied at the Vienna State Opera's opera school and is currently attending the Music and Arts University of the City of Vienna (MUK), focusing on solo singing under the guidance of Linda Watson.

JJ's musical journey includes appearances on The Voice UK in 2020, where he advanced to the knockout rounds under coach will.i.am, and Starmania in Austria in 2021, reaching the first final show. His musical style blends operatic vocals with pop and techno elements, creating a unique and emotionally resonant sound. Wasted Love, co-written with Teodora Špirić and Thomas Thurner, was released on March 6, 2025, and won the Eurovision Song Contest 2025 with a total of 436 points, including 258 points from the jury and 178 from the public televote.

Fluent in German, English, French, and Tagalog, JJ identifies as queer and is an advocate for LGBTQ+ rights. Following his Eurovision victory, he expressed disappointment over Israel's participation in the contest, citing the ongoing conflict in Gaza, and called for greater transparency in the voting system. He also criticized the censorship of LGBTQ+ symbols during the event.

Post-Eurovision, JJ plans to release his first EP and is hopeful that the 2026 Eurovision Song Contest will be held in Vienna. He aspires to continue using his platform to promote inclusivity and support for the queer community in Europe.

JJ's victory at Eurovision 2025 has solidified his position as a rising star in the music world, known for his powerful vocals, emotional depth, and commitment to social causes.
