Born of fevered rural tent revivals and urban clapboard churches, gospel music's passionate, soulful performances and musical virtuosity transformed it into one of America's most popular and influential genres, informing the blues, rock 'n' roll, R&B and soul revolutions.

A contemporary history, 'Rock My Soul' is the music of people, of community, of vitally talented individuals who come together with little but their incredibly gifted voices to create something deeply moving and powerful - something exceeding the sum of its parts. Here is music with a prominent role in the development of American culture - music sprung from adversity and celebrated through diversity.

PBS special programming invites viewers to experience the worlds of science, history, nature and public affairs; hear diverse viewpoints; and take front-row seats to world-class drama and performances. Viewer contributions are an important source of funding and make PBS programs possible. PBS and public television stations offer all Americans from every walk of life the opportunity to explore new ideas and new worlds through television and online content.
