Biography

Tommy Cash, born Tomas Tammemets on November 18, 1991, in the Kopli district of Tallinn, Estonia, hails from a mixed heritage background. His father is Russian, and his mother is Estonian, with Ukrainian and Kazakh ancestry from his grandmothers. Growing up in one of Tallinn's most impoverished areas, Cash was exposed to a blend of cultures that would later influence his artistic expression. He describes himself as a "post-Soviet rapper" with an "Eastern European soul" and a "Scandinavian CV".

Cash began his artistic journey in the early 2010s, initially gaining attention by uploading his music to SoundCloud. His breakout came with the 2016 music video for "Winaloto," which went viral and established him as a unique voice in the European music scene. His music blends elements of cloud rap, hard dance, and Baltic beats, often infused with surreal and provocative visuals.

Over the years, Cash has released several projects, including two studio albums and multiple EPs. His work often features collaborations with notable artists such as Charli XCX, Diplo, and Caroline Polachek . Beyond music, Cash is also a visual artist, known for his avant-garde exhibitions and performances that challenge conventional artistic norms.

In February 2025, Cash won Estonia's national selection, Eesti Laul, with his song "Espresso Macchiato," earning 83% of the public vote and the backing of an international jury . The track is a satirical blend of English and Italian, featuring humorous references to Italian culture, including lines like "sweating like a mafioso" and "life is like spaghetti".

The song's playful approach to Italian stereotypes sparked controversy in Italy, with some critics and organizations calling for its disqualification from the competition. Despite the backlash, Cash defended his work, stating that many Italians appreciated the song's humor and that it was intended as a lighthearted tribute to Italian culture.

At the Eurovision Song Contest 2025 in Basel, Switzerland, "Espresso Macchiato" finished in third place with 356 points, marking a significant achievement for both Cash and Estonia.

Fluent in multiple languages, including Estonian, Russian, and English, Cash is known for his eclectic fashion sense and boundary-pushing artistic endeavors. He has been involved in various art exhibitions, including a joint show with designer Rick Owens in 2019, and his solo project "Nukerashka" in 2024.

Cash's work often explores themes of identity, cultural hybridity, and the post-Soviet experience, reflecting his complex background and experiences growing up in Estonia. His participation in Eurovision has further solidified his status as a provocative and influential figure in contemporary music and art.
